Project 6A The Dangauan: A single-storey for duo bach by the beach

For this project, we were required to design a single-storey bach. Our site was at Teluk Tempoyak, which has a clear view of the second Penang bridge. One of the challenges we faced was that the bach should not be not than 15 metres square and the height of the bach was only limited to 5 metres tall to accomodate 2 individuals which can also accomodate 2 extra individuals for dinner. The material for the super structure required to use is concrete. We also had to instill all the knowledge we learnt from Project 1 up to Project 5 in this particular project. Thus, I come up with this design concept with relates closely to the word "PEACE".

My concept of peace came from the idea of the site itself; it is by the beach which means its close to water. I relate this closely to our senses such as sound, touch, and also sight. The sound of the waves stimulates a calm and relaxing feel, the breeze from the sea gives a breath of air to the surroundings, while the panaromic view of the Second Penang Bridge by the sea gives a peaceful feeling to the eye. I correlate my design more closely to water because I look at it as two water droplets dropping into a calm water surface; creating ripples from two different points and will go back to resting state when the intersecting points from both ripples collides.

Relating water very closely to my concept gave me the opportunity to have the Watercube Olympic Swimming Stadium in Beijing to be my percedent study. The design of the Watercube gives a water-like feels when you're inside a building and that is what I want my client to feel when they're inside the bach. I used the structure of the Watercube's facade as part of my bedroom roof to create the water-like feels and to also allow the client to experience the night life when they're in bed at night as the watercube facade that I used is more transparent than the real Watercube facade structure; just to give the client a clearer view of the exterior rather than to just have it as a normal facade.
