The word "Biomimicry" is a derivation from the word "bio" which is referring to living organism and
"mimicry" which refers to imitation. Biomimicry
is the imitation of the models, systems, and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex human problems. Biomimicry has been used for generations now as it has been a great help in creating a better environment not only in building-wise, but also for our daily usage. This project has personally give me a better insight of built environment as a whole as it broadens my knowledge not only on nature itself, but on architecture even more now. Project 3 was divided into two; Project 3A and Project 3B.
As for Project 3A: The Chosen Biome, we were required to produce a pencil drawing of a natural form, either a raw construction material used for the building material, or natural form which inspires an architect to produce a design based on natural systems. And for this, I chose the Venus Flower Basket, a type of sea sponge. The Venus Flower Basket has a thin-walled, cylindrical, vase-shaped tube with a large central atrium as it's body structure and the body is composed entirely of silica. It feeds by directing water through their bodies. It also hosts a lattice-like exoskeleton that appears glassy and glowing in it's underwater environment. The different levels of fibrous lattic works helps to disperse stresses on the organism in various directions and it's round shape reduces forces due to strong water currents.

As for Project 3B:
The Built Biomimetic/Biomimicry, based on the selected natural element presented in Project 3A, we were required to present in drawing a built biomimetic/biomimicry by architect that can be found on this planet. And for this I chose The Gherkin Tower which is located in London, United Kingdom and the architect is Foster and Partners. The Gherkin Tower is a 180 metres tall. This building has air ventilation similar to sea sponges, specifically the Venus Flower Basket. It uses half the energy that a similar tower would use, as gaps in each floor creates 6 shafts that serves as a natural ventilation system for the entire building. The shafts create a giant double effect; air is sandwiched between two layers and insulates the space inside. It's fully triangulated structure makes the building sufficiently stiff without any extra reinforcements.
